Persuasive Writing

In persuasive writing you give your opinion on one side of an issue. You try to convince your readers to agree with you.

  • Here are two paragraphs that argue opposite sides of an issue.

Are women as good at being police as men are?

    Opinion 1
I think that a policewoman can do as good a job as policeman. Some women are strong and physically fit and they know how to work hard. They are often more patient than men and they can handle difficult situations. They are intelligent and have a strong feeling of responsibility to take care of their country. Policewomen in the UAE help to preserve our culture. Finally, women can be very good police officers if they really want to be.

    Opinion 2
I think that men are better at being police officers than women. Men are naturally stronger than women and they can defend themselves better. They are not afraid to go anywhere that they are needed. Traditionally, women are needed at home to look after the children, but it is easy for men to work away from home. Many families do not want their daughters to leave the house alone and they are afraid the young women might get hurt. Finally, I think that the community would not want women to be police officers.

    Notice how:
  • Each paragraph is one block of text, no spaces.
  • It begins with a topic sentence that introduces what you are going to write about.
  • It ends with a sentence that summarizes what you have written.
  • A new sentence is used for each new point.
  • Every sentence begins with a CAPITAL LETTER & ends with a period.

Grade 11 - Essay on Health

Healthy People Create a Healthy Society

It is important to develop healthy individuals and in turn, a healthy society so that children will have a safe environment in which to grow up. Physical health, mental health and social health all are part of a person’s well being.
Individuals need to be physically healthy. Physically healthy people are able to complete their education and to work. Healthy people live longer. However, physically unhealthy people are a cost to the society. Health care is a major expense for any government.
Equally important is mental health. People who are mentally healthy are more likely to be happy. They can contribute many positive things to their communities. On the other hand, poor mental health often prevents people from being active members of society.
In addition, people must be healthy socially. People who know how to relate to one another and know how to behave are more likely to be more caring and tolerant. A caring society will take good care of children, the old and the disabled.
In conclusion, it is clear that having healthy people is important in developing a healthy society.
